My Girl 1991 Brittany Garcia Post #6

Brittany Garcia
My Girl
1991
Directed by: Howard Zieff

This was an excellent movie. It is based off a young girl named Vada Saltinfus. Her mother passed away when she was an infant, her father Harry owned a funeral parlor based out of their home, and a best friend named Thomas J. It was summer time so she and Thomas J. were practically together everyday. Throughout the movie, Vada had a mood ring that she wore religiously. One day she and her best friend were playing in the woods out by the lake and Vada lost her ring. A week or so later, Thomas J. goes back to find it, and ends up getting killed because there was a bee hive by where he was He got bit by too many and was allergic so they killed him. This part was so sad, I cried. Toward the end, we see Vada trying to overcome the loss of her best friend but it was very difficult for her.
I found a few crucial scenes in this movie that I felt were worthy to speak of in this paper.  The stairs in the house of the Saltinfus’s played a key role in several scenes. At one point, Vada loses her basketball down the stairs; creepy music begins to play as the camera has a long angle shot on her. This to me was the director trying to signify the moment. A little later on those same stairs, Harry scolds Shelly (his new love) and then walks away. Once he walks away, the camera shifts to looking down on Shelly. In a sly way, I feel this shows his superiority in that moment.  My favorite scene is toward the middle-end of the movie. Veda and Thomas J. are sitting under their favorite tree out by the lake. The camera goes back and forth with over-the-shoulder shots as the two converse about never having kissed anyone before. This scene ends with the peck kissing, having an awkward moment and then Thomas J. stands up and starts reciting the pledge of allegiance. It is too funny.
