#7 The Piano(1993) Amanda Valderrama

Directed by: Jane Campion
I thought that the Piano was rather depressing. It was a very intimate film and the characters were quite complex. Holly Hunter did a wonderful job of portraying a mute woman, although she had very few words she still managed to capture the emotions of her character through her physical performance. You could see the attachment that this woman had to the piano and the way she carried herself around certain people, there was a very good distinction that Hunter portrayed. This was Anna Paquin's first Oscar-winning movie and I think she certainly deserved it. My favorite scene was when Paquin and Sam Neil's character are running through the woods as the piano music plays. I just thought the scene was really well shot and the composing tied it together very nicely. The scene when Ada gets her finger chopped off was very intense, the minute it was about to happen the piano pops into your head. From watching the movie you know that this piano is her way of communicating, it's her expression. So, it did not surprise me at the end when they threw the piano overboard that she too jumped in to drown with it. Overall, I wasn't too crazy about the film, it wasn't exactly my taste and I would have preferred something with a little optimism.
