Father of the Bride
1991
Director: Charles Shyer
I
was actually really shocked at how funny this movie was. Steve Martin played
the father of a 22 year old who had just come home from studying abroad. She
met a 26-year-old man that she fell in love with and she planned on getting
married. Steve Martin did a phenomenal job with his reactions. Every line was
spot on, exactly something a father would say and do.
The
beginning of the film did a great job with establishing shots to get the sense
of where the family lived and what they did for work. It gave you the sense
that they were your average middle class family. The music was a little bit
annoying in the beginning; it was much like elevator music that was just too
loud. Towards the end of the movie, the music did get better, but at times I
felt that it over powered the importance of the lines. I felt I could barely
hear what the characters were saying because the music was put in too loud.
Another
technique that they used that had me in stitches was the flashbacks. In the beginning
of the film, When Annie told her father that she was getting married, they
flashed back after and extreme-close up of the fathers reaction. The flashback
was exactly what Annie just said, but she was about 5 years old. I thought that
this was absolutely hilarious. It was definitely my favorite part of the movie.
Overall,
I really enjoyed the technique of the film and the quality of acting. I thought
that it was pretty hilarious because it seemed rather realistic. I would definitely
watch that again.
