Basic Instinct
Director: Paul Verhoeven
Year: 1992
Basic Instinct is a very raunchy murder mystery movie. I probably should have done some research before I watched it because I really did not realize how much nudity and sexual content I was going to see. I was not expecting that at all. The main characters in the film Detective Nick Curran is played by Michael Douglas and the murderer Catherine Tramell is played by Sharon Stone. Because the film featured such good actors, it made the film a little bit better. The movie is about the murder of the rock star that had been stabbed while having sex with an undisclosed blonde woman. The detective assigned to the case is Nick Curran who works for the San Francisco Police department. The only suspect the detectives can come up with is Catherine Tramell who is an author and was the last one to be seen with the rock star. What Catherine really ends up doing is making detective Curran fall for her, which he eventually does. Catherine also wrote a new book that explained a murder with an ice pick, very similar to the ones that were actually occurring. At the end of the movie an ice pick is seen under Catherine’s bed where detective Curran is laying, even though it appeared as if she was going to kill him, she decided to have sex with him instead. The director used all the techniques that would be seen in a thriller type of movie such as over-the-shoulder and high and low angle shots. All in all, I really didn’t mind the movie but it could have been done a little more tastefully in my eyes. It did have a pretty good storyline and the acting was pretty good.
