Airport 1975 (1974)

Airport 1975 (1974)
Director: Jack Smight

The movie Airport 1975 was directed by Jack Smight and featured a cast starring Charlton Heston, Karen Black, and George Kennedy. The film is about the pilot of a small commuter plane suffering a heart attack and crashing into the cockpit of the 747 which in turn leaves the pilot injured and the co-pilots dead. The flight attendant is then instructed to fly the plane to keep it from crashing until they are able to get a professional pilot on the plane to take over.

I can honestly say I enjoyed this film. Although it was written in 1974, there wasn’t a great deal of cheesy acting as I had witnessed in a previously viewed movie. Airport 1975 was very interesting to watch. The mid-air collision is very surprising. It is supposed to be a dramatic movie, but I’ll admit I was amused by some reactions of the passengers, particularly a lady that stands up and yells like a maniac when the small plane crashes into the cockpit. I was also amused by Erik Estrada, trying to seduce the flight attendants, and Karen Black panicking on the radio. The rest of the dramatic scenes really get you stuck to your seat.

Although I enjoyed the film, there were a couple of discrepancies between scenes. For instance, the view from the 747 flight deck shows it is flying above the clouds, but it is later seen flying between the mountains, well below the clouds. When the plane flies at dawn, some interior shots showing total darkness outside are followed by scenes of the 747 flying with some sunlight.

Overall, this was a pretty decent film and one I would watch again. As I stated before, I wasn’t expecting mind boggling special effects, but I feel the director created a believable scene.
